Sodium propionate is a chemical compound, a salt of sodium and propionic acid with the formula NaC3H5O2, colorless crystals, dissolves in water, forms crystal hydrates. E281 refers to preservatives and acidity regulators of artificial origin, used for technological purposes in the production of food products to increase the duration of storage.


  • As a food additive that can be used in the production of processed cheeses, for surface treatment of hard cheeses and cheese products, in bakery and confectionery products;
  • used in medicine: it is part of preparations for the treatment of mycosis (fungus), is the active ingredient in eye drops, and is also used in the production of medicines for coughs and colds;
  • used in cosmetology.
